Duncan Jones Plans Ian Fleming Biopic

Timed to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the James Bond franchise and that recently debuted Skyfall teaser, Variety reports that a biopic is in the works on James Bond creator Ian Fleming, whose real-life exploits as a secret agent made him much more complex and interesting than his famous character, or so he would tell women. The project is being developed by director Duncan Jones (a man whose films Moon and Source Code have allowed him to escape the shadow of his "Zowie Bowie" code name) with a screenplay based on Andrew Lycett's biography, The Man Behind James Bond. ?Like that book, it will cover Fleming's life as a womanizing British intelligence officer who imbued his famous creation with most of his own tastes and viewpoints, earning for his efforts plenty of criticism as a classist, racist, sadomasochism-loving misogynist who could barely string a paragraph together, in addition to a lawsuit seemingly every other day.

But there's also plenty of spy movie intrigue to Fleming's story, as previously given the biopic treatment in 1989's Goldeneye: The Secret Life Of Ian Fleming and 1990's The Secret Life Of Ian Fleming, where Game Of Thrones' Charles Dance and Jason Connery (son of Sean) portrayed the author, to varying degrees of ridiculousness. No doubt a fan campaign is already in motion to attract most obvious candidate Benedict Cumberbatch, whose name is a trigger devised by Her Majesty's Secret Service to cloud the minds of foreign enemies.

Scientists find gold-plated fossil solution

Tuesday, May 22, 2012

An international team of scientists in the University of Leicester's Department of Geology has found a solution to a research problem involving fossils right next door - in the University's Chemistry Department.

Many objects, including fossils, can reveal a huge amount of scientific information when studied using the high power magnification of electron microscopes, but in order to study tiny fossils or microscopic details of larger fossils in this way, palaeontologists routinely coat the fossils with an ultra-thin layer of gold. This obviously changes the way the fossil looks, and so it is often necessary to remove the gold after analysis, but this is difficult and expensive and uses dangerous chemicals like cyanide.

University of Leicester chemists are developing industrial electro-plating and polishing techniques using liquid salts called 'ionic liquids' which are safe, cheap and environmentally friendly. Scientists from the two departments got together to see whether a similar process could be used on fossils. The work was supported by the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC).

They found that ionic liquids can remove gold quickly and easily without damaging even tiny, delicate fossils. The liquids are safe to handle, can be simply disposed of and can even dissolve the gold without affecting the glue that holds the fossil specimen in place for analysis.

Professor Mark Purnell, from the Department of Geology, said: "There are many cases where collecting the evidence required for research affects fossils or other objects in ways that might be considered as somewhat destructive ? gold coating for electron microscopy falls into this category. Understandably, this creates problems for places like museums which have to balance the value of research on their collections against the risk that specimens will be affected. This approach to gold removal offers a new way of tackling this problem that is safe for both researchers and the specimens."

Professor Andy Abbott, from the Department of Chemistry, added: "This is a very nice demonstration of the use of ionic liquids for metal recovery but it is just the tip of the iceberg as we are using this technology for the recycling of a wide range of alloys and waste materials. The University of Leicester is building a strong reputation for the development of sustainable materials."

Anger in spats is more about marital climate than heat of the moment

Monday, May 21, 2012

How good are married couples at recognizing each other's emotions during conflicts? In general, pretty good, according to a study by a Baylor University researcher. But if your partner is angry, that might tell more about the overall climate of your marriage than about what your partner is feeling at the moment of the dispute.

What's more, "if your partner is angry, you are likely to miss the fact that your partner might also be feeling sad," said Keith Sanford, Ph.D., an associate professor of psychology and neuroscience in Baylor University's College of Arts & Sciences. His study ? "The Communication of Emotion During Conflict in Married Couples" ?is published online in the American Psychological Association's Journal of Family Psychology.

"I found that people were most likely to express anger, not in the moments where they felt most angry, but rather in the situations where there was an overall climate of anger in their relationship ? situations where both partners had been feeling angry over a period of time," he said. "This means that if a couple falls into a climate of anger, they tend to continue expressing anger regardless of how they actually feel . . . It becomes a kind of a trap they cannot escape."

Common spats that might fester deal with in-laws, chores, money, affection and time spent on the computer.

Sanford found that when people express anger, they often also feel sad. But while a partner will easily and immediately recognize expressions of anger, the spouse often will fail to notice the sadness.

"When it comes to perceiving emotion in a partner, anger trumps sadness," he said.

Previous research has found that genuine expressions of sadness during a conflict can sometimes draw partners closer together, and it potentially can enable couples to break out of a climate of anger.

"A take-home message is that there may be times where it is beneficial to express feelings of sadness during conflict, but sad feelings are most likely to be noticed if you are not simultaneously expressing anger," Sanford said.

The findings were based on self-reporting by 83 married couples as well as observation and rating of their behavior by research assistants, who were given permission by the couples to videotape them through a one-way mirror. Couples were asked to choose two areas of conflict and talk to each other about them ? one chosen by the wife, the other by the husband. They also were asked to rate their emotions and those of their partners before and after each discussion.

Couples' "insider knowledge" of one another might be expected to make it easier for them to read each other, Sanford said. But the only time in which couples made significant use of insider knowledge to distinguish emotions was in interpreting soft emotions -- such as hurt or disappointment -- in conflicts about specific events, the study showed.

While women expressed soft emotions more, they were no better at perceiving hard emotions (such as anger) or soft ones, Sanford said.

(AP) ? A month ago, Jason Dufner was a single man still in search of his first PGA Tour victory.

Life has certainly changed for the 35-year-old golfer who last summer at the PGA Championship blew a four-stroke lead with four holes to play and lost in a playoff.

With a 25-foot birdie putt on the final hole of the Byron Nelson Championship on Sunday, Dufner closed out a one-stroke victory over Dicky Pride to win for the second time in four weeks.

"You probably couldn't dream it any better than what's been going on here," Dufner said. "The wedding has been in the works for close to a year, so we know that's been coming around the corner. And there's been a lot of good golf since then, but to win two events and get married in the span of 22 days, pretty remarkable."

Dufner got his first victory April 29 at New Orleans, then got married the following week.

Now he has already won again, this time making $1.17 million and taking over the top spot in the FedEx Cup standings.

His closing birdie wrapped up a 3-under 67 round for an 11-under 269 to avoid a playoff with Pride.

Pride, whose only PGA Tour victory in a 20-year professional career came in 1994, was at 10 under with a par-saving 22-foot putt at No. 18 for a round of 67 after hitting his drive into the water.

Moments later, Dufner made a putt that was only a few feet longer but on virtually the same line.

"Apparently that was not a very difficult putt on 18, from the long right," Pride said chuckling.

J.J. Henry, who had an early hole-in-one, was in the lead at 11 under after consecutive birdies at Nos. 15 and 16, overcoming a bad tee shot on the first and a greenside bunker on the second.

Pride made a 13-foot birdie at No. 17 right before Henry, in the final group with Dufner, hit a 7-iron over the par-3 green. The former TCU star lost the lead with a double bogey after a 4-foot putt slid just outside the cup.

"To be honest, I thought I hit a good shot on 17. I thought the wind was a little into me," Henry said. "I hit the line exactly where I tried to and it just carried about 6 or 7 yards too far."

After watching Henry's meltdown, Dufner made a tap-in par at No. 17 and then hit a big drive on No. 18 in the middle of the fairway. He hit a sand wedge to the middle of the green, then avoided a playoff with the long putt to join Hunter Mahan as the only two-time winners this season.

"I knew I was tied after I hit the tee shot," Dufner said. "I knew if I made birdie that I would win, par would be a playoff, but the playoffs aren't much fun. My experience in them aren't too great."

While Dufner's win at New Orleans came in a two-hole playoff against Ernie Els, he lost twice in playoffs last season, including to Keegan Bradley in the PGA Championship.

Joe Durant, who was the final alternate added to the Nelson field, shot a 65 to finish in a tie for third at 271 with Henry (68), Marc Leishman (66) and rookie Jonas Blixt (66).

Phil Mickelson, making his first Nelson start in five years, had four consecutive birdies on the front nine and went on to a round of 66 to finish four strokes back. He tied for seventh with Ken Duke, who also had a string of four birdies in a row in his own 66.

Pride let out a scream when his final putt dropped. Pride, who went to the University of Alabama, then watched the final group play the hole, and applauded on the clinching putt by Dufner, who went to rival Auburn.

"Everybody is making a big deal about that," Pride said of their college affiliations. "But he married a woman from Alabama to show him around."

Matt Kuchar, the world's fifth-ranked player who won The Players Championship a week earlier, had 70 and finished at 276 in a tie for 15th. He was trying to become the first PGA Tour player since Tiger Woods in 2009 to win in consecutive weeks.

Henry's ace came at the 154-yard No. 5 hole, when he hit a pitching wedge. When the ball rolled back into the cup, Henry thrust both of his arms in the air, then had an emphatic uppercut and he celebrated with the gallery.

After Henry's drive at the 504-yard 15th was way right and under a tree, he hit his approach to the middle of the green and made a 32-foot birdie putt that led to another, though more subdued fist pump. His approach at the easier par-5 16th went in a greenside bunker, but he blasted inside 2 1/2 feet for a birdie to get to 11 under.

Dufner had consecutive bogeys at Nos. 2 and 3, but quickly responded with consecutive birdies on the following two holes.

After a bogey at No. 11 following a bad tee shot, Dufner got back to 10 under with his birdie at the par-5 16th, when he blasted out of a greenside bunker to 6 feet.

The last of Mickelson's four birdies in a row came when he holed a 30-footer at the 461-yard eighth hole. That got the 10th-ranked player to 6 under at about the same time Dufner and Henry were finishing at No. 1, both at 8 under.

Mickelson was 8 under after a birdie at the par-5 16th, but his 3 1/2-foot par putt at the following par 3 circled the cup and rolled back toward him for his first bogey of the day.

"I was certainly disappointed with not getting that birdie," he said. "If I could get 17 or 18, get to 9 of 10 (under), you just never know."

Divots: Vijay Singh, a 34-time PGA Tour winner whose last victory was in 2008, was within two strokes of the lead after his third-round 66. He started Sunday with three consecutive bogeys, on way to a 71 and part of a ninth-place tie at 275. ... Bradley the nephew of LPGA great Pat Bradley who got his first PGA Tour victory at last year's Nelson, had a triple-bogey 7 at the 232-yard 11th hole for the second day in a row. He shot 72 for a 278 total.

Chinese activist who fled house arrest lands in U.S.

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) ? A blind Chinese legal activist who was suddenly allowed to leave the country arrived in the U.S. on Saturday, ending a nearly monthlong diplomatic tussle that had tested U.S.-China relations.

Chen Guangcheng had been hurriedly taken from a hospital hours earlier and put on a plane for the United States after Chinese authorities suddenly told him to pack and prepare to leave. He arrived Saturday evening at Newark Liberty International Airport, outside New York City.

The departure of Chen, his wife and two children to the United States marked the conclusion of nearly a month of uncertainty and years of mistreatment by local authorities for the self-taught activist.

After seven years of prison and house arrest, Chen made a daring escape from his rural village in April and was given sanctuary inside the U.S. Embassy, triggering a diplomatic standoff over his fate. With Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton in Beijing for annual high-level discussions, officials struck a deal that let Chen walk free, only to see him have second thoughts. That forced new negotiations that led to an agreement to send him to the U.S. to study law, a goal of his, at New York University.

"Thousands of thoughts are surging to my mind," Chen said before he left China. His concerns, he said, included whether authorities would retaliate for his negotiated departure by punishing his relatives left behind. It also was unclear whether the government will allow him to return.

Chen's expected attendance at New York University comes from his association with Jerome Cohen, a law professor there who advised Chen while he was in the U.S. Embassy. The two met when Chen came to the United States on a State Department program in 2003, and Cohen has been staunch advocate for him since.

"I'm very happy at the news that he's on his way and I look forward to welcoming him and his family tonight and to working with him on his course of study," Cohen said.

Chen will live at the Washington Square Village complex, a New York University housing facility where faculty and graduate students reside, an NYU spokesman said.

Before he left China, Chen asked his supporters and others in the activist community for their understanding of his desire to leave the front lines of the rights struggle in China.

"I am requesting a leave of absence, and I hope that they will understand," he said.

State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland praised the quiet negotiations that freed him.

"We also express our appreciation for the manner in which we were able to resolve this matter and to support Mr. Chen's desire to study in the U.S. and pursue his goals," Nuland said in a statement.

The White House also said it was pleased with the outcome of negotiations.

China's Foreign Ministry said it had no comment. The government's news agency, Xinhua, issued a brief report saying that Chen "has applied for study in the United States via normal channels in line with the law."

Chen's supporters welcomed his departure. "This is great progress," said U.S.-based rights activist Bob Fu. "It's a victory for freedom fighters."

The 40-year-old Chen is emblematic of a new breed of activists that the Communist Party finds threatening. Often from rural and working-class families, these "rights defenders," as they are called, are unlike the students and intellectuals from the elite academies and major cities of previous democracy movements and thus could potentially appeal to ordinary Chinese.

Chen gained recognition for crusading for the disabled and for farmers' rights and fighting against forced abortions in his rural community. That angered local officials, who seemed to wage a personal vendetta against him, convicting him in 2006 on what his supporters say were fabricated charges and then holding him for the past 20 months in illegal house arrest.

Even with the backstage negotiations, Chen's departure came hastily. Chen spent the last 2 1/2 weeks in a hospital for the foot he broke escaping house arrest. Only on Wednesday did Chinese authorities help him complete the paperwork needed for his passport.

Chen said by telephone Saturday that he was informed at the hospital just before noon to pack his bags to leave. Officials did not give him and his family passports or inform them of their flight details until after they got to the airport.

Seeming ambivalent, Chen said that he was "not happy" about leaving and that he had a lot on his mind, including worries about retaliation against his extended family back home. His nephew, Chen Kegui, is accused of attempted murder after he allegedly used a kitchen knife to attack officials who stormed his house after discovering Chen Guangcheng was missing.

"I hope that the government will fulfill the promises it made to me, all of its promises," Chen said. Such promises included launching an investigation into abuses against him and his family in Shandong province, he said before the phone call was cut off.

Much as Chen has said he wants return to China, it remains uncertain whether the Chinese government would bar him, as they have done with many exiled activists.

"Chen's departure for the U.S. does not and should not in any way mark a 'mission accomplished' moment for the U.S. government," said Phelim Kine, a senior Asia researcher at Human Rights Watch. "The harder, longer-term part is ensuring his right under international law to return to China when he sees fit."

Newspaper Attacks UK Government For Its ?Closeness? To Google

Screen Shot 2012-05-19 at 14.25.54UK tabloid newspaper The Daily Mail, has decided to raise the issue of Google's influence on the UK government, after uncovering the fact that Conservative Party ministers have held meetings with Google an average of once a month since the General Election two years ago. There have been 23 meetings between Tory ministers and Google since June 2010, with Prime Minister David Cameron meeting Google three times and George Osborne - who as Chancellor of the Exchequer is supposed to meet with business leaders - four times in two years. The story needs to be a seen in a wider context. The Conservatives have recently come under fire for having too close a relationship to another powerful entity, News Corporation (as did the Labour party during its tenure). A huge inquiry into Press standards has in large part focused on the ties between Rupert Murdoch?s media giant and the Conservatives. But what the report buries way down in the article, is the number of times the newspaper itself has met with the Government. A Google spokesperson told us: "It's absolutely right that governments speak with companies about issues that affect their citizens. The British Government makes the list of those meetings publicly available - including the Daily Mail?s 34 meetings over the same period." In other words, the Daily Mail has met with the Government almost one and a half times a month (on average) since they entered office - that's quite a bit more than Google has. It's likely those were high-level meetings, not editorial ones.

Summer Party Planning: The Inside Scoop Entertaining Expert Tony Schubert Reveals Clever Party Planning Tricks that Also Help Save on Budget

Wedding tablescape by Tony Schubert of Event Eleven

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) June 10, 2009

This summer, Americans are spending less, staying home and planning their own versions of the ?staycation.? Summer is also a time for parties?. weddings, bar mitzvahs, birthdays, anniversaries, family reunions, beach parties, barbeques: Recession-proof events that bring together family and friends, despite the struggling economy. But for so many people, the question is how to plan the party when they are watching every dollar?

The keys to success are a few simple tips professional event planners utilize to ?wow? their clients and party guests, regardless of the size of the budget. Tony Schubert, a Los Angeles-based event designer and entertaining expert, offers insider scoop on how to make your party sizzle and shine without breaking the bank.

From the sexy interior decor for the legendary Hollywood hot spot Les Deux to lavish A- list parties like the 2009 People-EIF post-SAG Awards Gala, Schubert has spearheaded beautiful, original and expertly executed events and environments in glamour capitals all over the world. His Los Angeles-based company, Event Eleven (http://www.eventeleven.com), has achieved an array of technical feats ? from the transformation of a massive nightclub into a disco roller rink to planning intimate and exquisitely detailed private events such as weddings and high profile luncheons for exclusive luxury brands.

With over a decade of hands-on experience, Schubert has amassed an arsenal of hidden tricks on how to stretch your dollars without sacrificing style or substance.

?There are a few ways to make your event look expensive ? from lighting and linens to florals and food and wine- that are actually quite simple and affordable,? advises Schubert. ?I always advise clients who need to stick to a strict budget to choose one or two key things to splurge on and let the rest come together for less. Which doesn?t mean sacrificing style, you just need to get creative!?

Schubert offers a sampling of his summer event tips:

Wedding planning? Splurge on lighting. Invitations might get thrown away, but photographs will last a lifetime.
Hiring a band for your event? A 4-piece string section will sound cleaner than a 15-piece band.
A family reunion or graduation? Decorate with family photographs ? as centerpieces, as wall-art, as invites. Or frame them as party gifts for family members.
Birthday party for friends at home? Easily create ambiance by switching to amber color light bulbs. Rearrange furniture for an element of surprise. Add simple, fresh flowers and candles. Pre-make a specialty drink (cheaper than bottles of wine) ? try a Cadillac Margarita on the rocks. It?s cool and sexy. With the money saved on wine and fancy decor, hire someone to help clean and keep the margaritas fresh!
4th of July BBQ? Why not mow the lawn into the shape of a big 4 (or ask your gardener to do the honors)! Place candles (tea lights, hurricanes) around the perimeter to highlight, and it is sure to be the hit of the party? for little to no cost.

Over the past 10 years, Tony Schubert has built his business into one of the most highly sought-after event designers for eclectic, influential clients ranging from COACH and MOCA to Disney and TV Guide. After spending several years investing in and promoting some of the hottest clubs in LA, the production bug hit Schubert in full force in 1994 following the success of his first annual Halloween bash in Hollywood. That celebration fueled his passion for producing large scale, multi-themed, interactive events, prompting Schubert to officially launch his company, Event Eleven, in May of 1997.

With Schubert at the company?s helm, Event Eleven?s talented staff of producers and technicians (in Los Angeles and Miami) has earned its reputation as a top-notch, visionary, and capable team. No matter how lofty the idea, Schubert and his crew can make it a reality with seamless execution.

The company?s first large scale production was the 1st Annual Latin Grammy Awards Pre-Party in 2000, which entertained such heavy hitters as Jennifer Lopez, Marc Anthony, and Enrique Iglesias. On the heels of Justin Timberlake?s blazing release of his sophomore album, Event Eleven was hand picked to produce the fashion show and after party for the pop star?s William Rast clothing line in October 2006. The bash ended up being LA Fashion Week?s hottest ticket.

Signaling a changing of the guard at Hollywood?s highest profile industry events, Schubert was selected to take over the reigns for the design of the 2009 post-SAG Awards Gala. A major industry coup, the event is one of the most respected and well-attended parties of the Awards season.

Enhancing Your Room's Design and Functionality With Sliding ...

Closets with sliding wardrobe doors are an essential part of a homeowner's bedroom because most of the dressing is done in front of the wardrobe. Everything that the homeowner needs while getting dressed is usually in there. Therefore, homeowners require ample space in front of their closets where they can stand and easily access items in the wardrobe. This is made possible by sliding mirror doors. They are the most suitable option for closets in the sense of design and function.

Regular exercise may help, according to new study in Pain

Philadelphia, PA, May 17, 2012 Stories of athletes bravely "playing through the pain" are relatively common and support the widespread belief that they experience pain differently than non-athletes. Yet, the scientific data on pain perception in athletes has been inconsistent, and sometimes contradictory. Investigators from the University of Heidelberg have conducted a meta-analysis of available research and find that in fact, athletes can indeed tolerate a higher level of pain than normally active people. However, pain threshold, the minimum intensity at which a stimulus is perceived as painful, did not differ in athletes and normal controls. Their findings are published in the June issue of Pain.

"Our analysis reveals that pain perception differs in athletes compared to normally active controls," says lead investigator Jonas Tesarz, MD. "Studies in athletes offer the opportunity for an evaluation of the physical and psychological effects of regular activity on pain perception, which might foster the development of effective types of exercise for relief in pain patients."

Researchers reviewed fifteen studies that evaluated experimentally induced pain threshold or tolerance in athletes compared to normally active controls. 568 athletes and 331 normally active controls were included. Eight of the studies were conducted in the USA, two in Canada, one in Australia, and four were conducted in Europe. The studies, which included both men and women, evaluated endurance sports, game sports, and strength sports. Twelve studies reported on pain tolerance, and nine studies examined pain threshold.

Athletes were found to have consistently higher pain tolerance in comparison to normally active adults. The magnitude of pain that athletes could withstand varied depending upon the type of sport in which they participate. For example, endurance athletes had a moderate tolerance for pain and their scores were fairly uniform. Athletes involved in game sports had a higher tolerance for pain than other athletes, but the results varied widely, suggesting that endurance athletes are more alike in their physical and psychological profiles, while athletes involved in game sports are more diverse.

The finding that regular exercise is clearly associated with higher pain tolerance, but pain thresholds are affected more ambiguously, likely has clinical implications, according to Dr. Tesarz. "Numerous studies of the effect of physical exercise in pain patients demonstrate a consistent impact on quality of life and functioning without an improvement in pain scores. It may be advisable in exercise treatment for pain patients to focus on the development of their pain-coping skills that would affect tolerance, rather than the direct alleviation of pain threshold," he notes.

"Further research is needed to clarify the exact relationship between physical activity and modifications in pain perception, and to identify the involved psychological factors and neurobiological processes. However, the observation that pain perception is modifiable by physical activity provides promise for the use of non-invasive methods with few side effects for patients with chronic pain conditions," concludes Dr. Tesarz.

Don't bet on Mitt Romney winning in Massachusetts

BELMONT, Mass. (AP) ? Don't bet on Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney winning his home state or even trying.

"That's not been a topic of discussion," Romney campaign adviser Kevin Madden said when asked if the former Massachusetts governor would compete in the heavily Democratic state.

Aides say there are other ways he can win the White House and deny President Barack Obama a second term without banking on Massachusetts' 11 electoral votes.

That political reality illustrates the degree to which Romney's efforts to curry favor with conservative Republicans in the primaries has alienated the moderate base that launched his political career.

If Romney were lose Massachusetts and still defeat Obama, he would be the first presidential candidate elected without carrying his home state since 1916, when Democratic President Woodrow Wilson retained the White House despite New Jersey's absence from the win column.

In 2000, Democrat Al Gore, who had spent years in Washington as a senator and vice president, fell short of winning Tennessee in his losing White House bid. Other notable home-state losers include Democrats Hubert Humphrey of Minnesota in 1968 and Adlai Stevenson of Illinois in 1952 and 1956. Republicans need to go back to 1936 to find a nominee who didn't carry his home state: Kansas Gov. Alf Landon.

Romney aides argue that it would be a waste of money to run TV ads and compete in a state Obama carried by 25 percentage points in 2008.

Some Massachusetts residents agree, feeling that Romney used the state as a springboard for his national political ambitions. Some seem to resent him for it.

"He doesn't know where he lives," said Mike Egan, a retired independent sitting at a Dunkin' Donuts in Belmont, near Romney's home.

While Romney's permanent address is the home he keeps in this upscale Boston suburb, he spends considerable time, including holidays and vacations, at his homes in California and New Hampshire.

Egan and others say Romney seemed to have his eye on the White House as soon as he arrived at the Massachusetts State House in 2003.

The following year, he made his first trip to Iowa, home of the leadoff presidential caucuses, to speak at the state GOP's fall banquet some weeks before President George W. Bush's re-election.

He would visit Iowa three times in 2005 and nine times in 2006. That year, Romney spent 212 days outside of Massachusetts. One trip included a visit to Iraq and Afghanistan to enhance his international credentials, just as his state grappled with a devastating flood.

"By the time he left, it became clear to everybody that he was committed to national politics," said Massachusetts Republican Sheldon Binder, a retiree who supported Romney, as he sat near Egan.

Republicans had held the governorship for 12 straight years by the time Romney took office in 2003.

Voters were comfortable supporting candidates with right-of-center fiscal profiles. Romney's moderate profile, including support of abortion and gay rights, fit in with other Republicans.

But some in Massachusetts were turned off by what they saw as Romney's effort to project a more conservative profile on hot-button issues, in part to prepare to court socially conservative activists in states such as Iowa that hold early nominating contests in election years.

Romney reversed his position on abortion while in office. After advocating full equality for gay and lesbian couples, he publicly condemned the Massachusetts Supreme Court decision in 2003 to allow gay marriage.

"He's a moderate. He's not a conservative Republican in the true sense of the word," said Matt Walsh, a 36-year-old advertiser from Mansfield who sat with his mother at the doughnut shop. "That's why he played well at first. He won the voters in the middle."

Romney was elected governor with 50 percent of the vote. His approval ratings, while never soaring, topped 50 percent in public opinion polls at times during his one term. But by the October before he left office in 2007, Romney's approval had dipped to 34 percent in a Boston Globe poll.

With Massachusetts apparently out of reach, Romney aides are trying to claim his native Michigan as the campaign's home turf. But while Obama can bank on winning his home state of Illinois, Michigan is no lock for Romney.

Romney, 65, was born in Detroit and grew up nearby in Bloomfield Hills, but hasn't lived in Michigan since he was a teenager. Despite Michigan being viewed as competitive in recent campaigns, no Republican has carried the state since George H. W. Bush in 1988.

What's more, Obama and other Democrats have criticized Romney for opposing the 2008 federal bailout of Detroit-based automakers Chrysler and General Motors. Romney favored allowing the companies to go through bankruptcy without taxpayer help.

Obama frequently highlights his decision to extend the companies a lifeline and their return to profitability as one of the successes of his administration.

Still, Michigan is more within Romney's reach than for any Republican in nearly a quarter century.

His family name, made by his father, George, once a governor and an automotive executive in Michigan, still resonates in the state. Romney also has influential contacts in the state, which he reminded voters about at every stop while campaigning for Michigan's GOP primary in February, which he won.

Michigan also has trended Republican in recent state elections, including a 2010 GOP sweep of statewide offices. Detroit, the dominant force for Democrats, has seen its population shrink amid the auto industry's troubles, while its suburbs and western and northern Michigan have kept their GOP complexion.

"The climate is much more ripe for a Republican victory in 2012," said Jeff Timmer, a former Michigan Republican Party director. "When you add to that he does have home-state roots and an established presence, it adds an element to Michigan that no other candidate has brought to this state in a long time."

So while Michigan may also be a stretch, it rates higher than Massachusetts on Romney's priority list, according to former New Hampshire Gov. John Sununu.

Of Romney's chances in Massachusetts, Sununu said: "I wouldn't rule it out completely ? even though it's No. 50 on the list."

Steps You Can Take to Prevent Bankruptcy

If there is one word that people who are in financial distress try to avoid at all costs, it is bankruptcy.? Just the word itself can conjure up feelings of emptiness and despair.? Of course, if you have to file for bankruptcy your life isn?t going to end.? For some people it can even act as a fresh start to get their lives back on track.? However, it?s generally understood that for most, bankruptcy is something that should be avoided.? Luckily, not every troubled financial story has to have the same, sad ending.? You can usually avoid bankruptcy by taking some specific steps when you realize you?re in trouble. ?

The first and most important step that you can take to avoid bankruptcy is to make an appointment with a debt solution company and go over your options.? Knowing what is available for you to do will help you decide on the best course of action for you to take.? You will sit down with an expert and reveal all your debts and all the details of your situation, so you can learn how best to proceed.? Obviously, if you?re not opting for bankruptcy you will have to find a way to repay your debts, but you do have some viable options.

?

Debt consolidation is one way to organize all your debts and get them paid.? With a debt consolidation, you will take out a loan and then pay off all of your other debts with that loan amount.? The accounts for the previous debts will be closed and you will have only one debt, with one monthly payment to make.? Debt consolidation usually results in a lower monthly payment, and is a genuine way to pay down your debt.? Debt consolidation may take the form of a home equity loan, personal loan or line of credit.? If your credit is really bad and your situation really bad, you may have trouble getting a debt consolidation loan at all. ?

Another step you can take to avoid bankruptcy is a consumer proposal.? This kind of solution is an agreement between you and your creditors, where you only have to pay back a portion of what you owe.? The debt amounts are adjusted so you only have to pay a percentage and not the whole amounts.? The reason that your creditors might go for this type of arrangement is because they know you are in a bad spot, and if you do file for bankruptcy they won?t get anything at all. ?

Naturally, the best way for you avoid any of the negative aspects of debt is to stay out of it in the first place.? The best way to avoid bankruptcy is to live within your means and to not use credit if you don?t have to.? Everyone has the intention of paying things off quickly, but so often life gets in the way and those payments end up being delayed and them adding up.? Use common sense and don?t take on more credit just because you can, and you should be okay.

Manchester FD trying iPad in truck

Wednesday May 16, 2012

BRANDON CANEVARI

Manchester Journal

MANCHESTER -- The Manchester Fire Department is taking a new approach to providing fire service. The town plans to equip the department?s newest firetruck with an iPad instead of the more traditional Toughbook, which are laptops designed for durability and to perform in harsh environments.

"We?re going to experiment with one. We?ve been talking to people all over the country about these things," said fire department member Lee Krohn. "The goal is to improve the department?s capacity to respond ... in an emergency situation."

Krohn said the department is purchasing one iPad initially to determine if it will meet department needs. "Assuming it proves it?s value like we believe it will, then we can add more over time," he said.

Chief Phil "Grub" Bourn said the department planned to correct any problems they might experience in the use of the iPad and then install two more -- one in Engine 2 and the other in the Aerial Platform truck.

While many fire departments in cities and towns throughout the country use computers in their fire trucks, use of an iPad is not the most conventional choice. "We may be somewhat of a pioneer [in the state,]" said Krohn.

Officials at the Vermont Fire Academy in Pittsford said that they were not aware of any other departments in the state that were using iPads in their trucks.

Krohn said

Bourn had spoken with firefighters in Fort Meyers, Fla., who are using Toughbooks in their vehicles. When they heard Manchester was planning to use an iPad in one of their vehicles, Krohn said they were interested in finding out how it performed when used for fire service.

Originally, Krohn said the department was considering installing a Toughbook in one of the fire engines. However, as the concept of installing a computer in one of the engines began to be discussed more, Krohn said they reached the conclusion that an iPad may serve the department?s needs.

Bourn said the iPads will be loaded with, among other things, directions to various locations throughout town, floor plans, and the locations of dry hydrants as well as how many gallons per minute they produce.

"It will give us the exact location with a picture of street, the 911 number so we?re not radioing back to dispatch," Bourn said. "It will give us the directions right to where we?re going. It?s going to save a lot of time on directions."

By providing firefighters with directions quickly and efficiently, Bourn said that use of the iPads should result in helping them save more lives, property and improve services.

Both Bourn and Krohn said another advantage of iPad is that it takes significantly less time to boot up than the Toughbook. "You want the officer in the first response vehicle to ? turn it on and be able to have all the information at his or her fingertips and be ready," said Krohn.

Another reason the department chose to use an iPad is the difference in cost between the two computers. A top of the line iPad, Krohn said, is about $900, whereas one of the least expensive Toughbooks costs about $3,500.

The department is purchasing the iPad out of a $2,500 gift donated to them by the Manchester Rotary Club, which came from the March Madness event the club held. The department also received another $500 from the Club from the 50/50 raffle at the March.

Business Innovation Challenge Invites Companies to Share their ...

Business Innovation ChallengeGormley, ON (PRWEB) May 01, 2012 ? In an era of crowdsourcing CanadaOne.com has launched an ?open innovation project?, the Business Innovation Challenge, to help small and medium-sized businesses discover practical ways to innovate.

The idea behind the project is simple: Companies are asked to share practical things they have done that have improved the way they do business. Their stories will then be shared openly to help others explore and visualize ways they can improve their own companies.

?Many smaller businesses are reluctant to implement new ideas and innovations into their companies, because they have difficulty understanding how the pieces fit together and don?t have examples to follow,? says Julie King, co-founder and managing editor of Candaone.com. ?As a magazine we are limited to sharing a few ideas at a time. By creating this open innovation project, we are expanding the opportunities to develop a more robust knowledge-base.?

While an emphasis on technology is expected in submissions to the Business Innovation Challenge, the project is open to all ideas from organizations of all types and sizes.

?We expect that some business will share stories about how they have used technology to operate more efficiently, but we also want to hear about low-tech innovations as well,? says King. ?For example, a Chinese restaurant that successfully transformed one third of its space to accommodate take-out customers with a luxurious waiting lounge would be a great example of customer-focused innovation.?

To participate in the Business Innovation Challenge, businesses can go to http://www.canadaone.com/innovation/ where they will be asked to fill out a short form that walks them through the process of sharing their stories. While spam will be removed from the system, businesses are invited to brag about their acts of innovation.

By sharing their stories, businesses will have the chance at national media exposure and they will also contribute to a knowledge-base that they can tap into as a creative font for new ideas.

The challenge will rely on self-policing through a ratings system to help the best ideas emerge. As stories are published, users will have the ability rate projects, which will also be tagged to make them easy to find as the number of projects increases.

?There has been a lot of hype about this being the information age, but information is meaningless unless it is transformed into knowledge that can be acted upon. With the Business Innovation Challenge we hope to contribute to the creation of knowledge for small and medium-sized companies,? says King.

The project will collect stories through the spring and summer and www.CanadaOne.com will start publishing them on an ongoing basis in the fall.

In Star Trek lore, the first Starship Enterprise will be built by the year 2245. But today, an engineer has proposed ? and outlined in meticulous detail ? building a full-sized, ion-powered version of the Enterprise complete with 1G of gravity on board, and says it could be done with current technology, within 20 years. ?We have the technological reach to build the first generation of the spaceship known as the USS Enterprise ? so let?s do it,? writes the curator of the?Build The Enterprise website, who goes by the name of BTE Dan.

This ?Gen1? Enterprise could get to Mars in ninety days, to the Moon in three, and ?could hop from planet to planet dropping off robotic probes of all sorts en masse ? rovers, special-built planes, and satellites.?

Complete with conceptual designs, ship specs, a funding schedule, and almost every other imaginable detail, the?BTE website?was launched just this week and covers almost every aspect of how the project could be done. This Enterprise would be built entirely in space, have a rotating gravity section inside of the saucer, and be similar in size with the same look as the USS Enterprise that we know from Star Trek.

?It ends up that this ship configuration is quite functional,? writes BTE Dan, even though his design moves a few parts around for better performance with today?s technology. This version of the Enterprise would be three things in one: a spaceship, a space station, and a spaceport. A thousand people can be on board at once ? either as crew members or as adventurous visitors.

While the ship will not travel at warp speed, with an ion propulsion engine powered by a 1.5GW nuclear reactor, it can travel at a constant acceleration so that the ship can easily get to key points of interest in our solar system. Three additional nuclear reactors would create all of the electricity needed for operation of the ship.

The saucer section would be a .3 mile (536 meter) diameter rotating, magnetically-suspended gravity wheel that would create 1G of gravity.

The first assignments for the Enterprise would have the ship serving as a space station and space port, but then go on to missions to the Moon, Mars, Venus, various asteroids and even Europa, where the ships? laser would be used not for combat but for cutting through the moon?s icy crust to enable a probe to descend to the ocean below.
